About CFP Board
Founded in 1985 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) has a mission to benefit the public by granting the CFP® certification and upholding it as the recognized standard for competent and ethical financial planning.
CFP Board owns the CFP® certification marks in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements. More than 75,000 individuals are currently authorized by CFP Board to use the CFP® marks.
In addition to administering the CFP® certification process, CFP Board works with many educational institutions that help individuals obtain the body of professional knowledge required to practice financial planning, and works alongside membership organizations and financial services firms that provide support to professionals who provide financial planning services to the public.
